PHILIPPINES
EcoPlanet Bamboo is implementing the 8,360 hectare Lanao del Sur Bamboo Reforestation Project (VCS Project 2958), on in the Philippines on the island of Mindanao. The project is restoring denuded government timberlands under a 50 year land lease and management agreement in an area that has suffered from low economic development and high levels of deforestation.
This carbon financed, nature based solutions project is restoring approximately 5,000 hectares of extremely degraded mountainous terrain with native Dendrocalamus asper bamboo and a further 1,200 hectares with tree species native to the original montane forests. Reforestation activities are ongoing with restoration of the area targeted to occur between 2022 - 2025 with the first 1,300 hectares planted to date.
These forest restoration activities will generate up to 4 million tons of carbon emission removals over the next 20 year period while reducing soil erosion and protecting the surrounding watersheds that supply the surrounding food production areas of Mindanao's lowlands.
The Lanao del Sur Bamboo Reforestation Project is creating long term employment opportunities in an area that has received little development to date and where poverty levels are high. Additional activities include the issuance of stewardship certificates and permanent farm lands to more than 300 families currently living within unstructured and informal settlements.
The project is successfully registered on the Verra Registry.
